26th – 30th April 2021

This week Janet hosted a course for West Dunbartonshire Council, held at Kilpatrick School in Clydebank. There were three participants for the full five day Handling People with Special Needs Education Train the Trainer course, Jennifer Leith, Easton Roberts and Claire Dalrymple. They were also joined on Thursday 29th April by three additional members of staff, Linda McGregor, Kirsty Wallace and Elaine Allan. These three Key Trainers have previously attended and passed the five day course and were now due to attend a one day face to face refresher course. This was the perfect opportunity for them to do this whilst at the same time meeting the new trainers that will be joining their manual handling training team.

Today Jackie visited Penn Hall School in Wolverhampton to deliver a one day Handling People with Special Needs Education refresher evaluation workshop. There are four key trainers based at this school, Janet Coley, Tracey Padley, Kim Morgan and Janice Handley, and they work brilliantly as a training team. Jackie even commented that they are doing an exceptional job in school.

Reflect

Today’s refresher course (19th April 2021) was a little different to the ones we normally deliver. One of our current Key Trainers contacted us to let us know that herself and her colleague had moved to a new employer and that the clients that they would now be working with were changing from children to young adults, however they wanted to continue with their manual handling accreditation from Centaur. Our trainer, Jan, went along to Reflect and met with the two Key Trainers, Helen Spear and Sarah Keirle, delivering all the necessary training they would need going forward whilst refreshing their knowledge in the theory elements of safe manual handling. They also received a copy of the Handling People with Special Needs V2 (Adults) training pack as part of this update to their training.

Jan really enjoyed her day visiting this new organisation, although she did say that the venue was a barn in the middle of nowhere and she needed a Land Rover to get there! Apparently the views were amazing though.

17th – 18th April 2021

This weeks course was a little bit different to the course we would normally run. We were asked by Hounslow London Borough Council of we could send one of our trainers, Janet, along to Bright Horizons Nursery in Hounslow to work with their staff and one of their children to carry out and complete a full risk assessment and to train the staff who will be working with this particular child. The training was to cover the theory and practical knowledge needed to safely carry out any future manual handling required.

This week Jan made the long journey over to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis to deliver another three day Load Management Theory and Client Handling Techniques Train the Trainer Masterclass course for Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) We had four participants for this course, Katie Ann Young, Emma MacLeod and Scott McConnell who are all from the council and they were joined by Catriona MacDonald from Western Islands Community Care Forum. It was a great three days and all four of the participants worked really hard to cover all the compulsory requirements.

This is the best moving and handling course i have been on and I have been doing training courses since 1999!” - Katie Ann Young, Care Home Manager

Churchtown Primary School

On the 12th April Janet spent the day with a group of staff from Churchtown Primary School in Southport. This site visit was requested by the schools Assistant Head Teacher, Sue Anderson to deliver manual handling training specifically based around hoisting to this group of staff. The day went really well with all staff working hard to gain the knowledge and skills required to safely carry out any manual handling in school when needed.

Today’s course was a little different as we were asked by one of our Key Trainers, Sue Hand from Beacon Hill Academy if we could go along to her school and deliver a one on one refresher evaluation workshop. Sue had already attended the five day Handling People with Special Needs Education train the trainer masterclass course and was due a one day refresher course but felt she would benefit from a one on one session with a Centaur primary trainer and we were happy to arrange this. The day was spent with Sue and Janet looking at changes to legislation, new equipment, training skills and transfer techniques along with refreshing Sue’s knowledge in the theory from the training pack.
