Humberston Park School

This week we held a course at Humberston Park School in Grimsby from the 23rd – 26th April 2019. This was a four day Handling People with Special Needs Education train the trainer masterclass course to train five new Key Trainers, Alison TidswellJulia Pixsley, Debbie Campbell, Camille Evison and Adrienne Cooney,  to join the existing team of manual handling trainers based within the school. It was a busy four days with all five of the participants working very hard and demonstrating superb practical skills. The trainer, Janet, said that “they were very focused, worked really hard and were very keen to learn and absorb new techniques and knowledge“.

 

Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar

Today’s course, 24th April 2019, was a one day Load Management Theory & Client Handling Techniques refresher evaluation workshop for staff based within Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar (Stornoway Council) and who have previously attended our three day Train the Trainer Masterclass course.  It was a very busy and full day with nine participants for the course which was held at Sacred Heart House on the Isle of South Uist.

Attending the course we had Shona Davidson, Linda MacDonald, Jacqueline MacLeod, Ann Marie Lindsay, Michelle Galbraith, Mary Matheson, Donna MacLeod, Muriel MacLeod and Sandy Maclean. Despite the large group the trainer said that they all worked very well together and a lot of areas were covered during the day including assessments, equipment, problem solving and practical techniques as well as theory knowledge.

Extra Care

This week’s course was for Extra Care in Northern Ireland and this was a three day Load Management Theory & Client Handling Techniques Masterclass course. We ran the course from the 15th – 17th April at their head quarters in County Antrim and we had eight of their staff attending Sharon Scott, Charles McCann, Cherith Carmichael, Jane Abraham, Alannah Phillips-Wilson, Carol McKee, Elizabeth Buchanan and Barna Barbas.

It was a very busy three days with all eight of the participants working very hard, with lots of fantastic group discussions and problem solving. Jan, Centaur trainer, commented that the group have a good support notwork to enable them to begin training and that they all showed a high level of enthusiasm and capability.

This weeks course was a five day train the trainer masterclass course and was held at Dorothy Goodman School in Leicestershire. It was a Handling People with Special Needs Education course which is aimed at staff who work with children of education age (3-19). Attending the five day course we had two staff, Jo Smith and Georgina Barnes, we also had two staff join the course for the fourth day as a refresher course, Wendy Jeffs who is also based at Dorothy Goodman School and Kayleigh Haynes who work at Wigston Menphys Nursery School also in Leicestershire.

Refresher Workshop – 3rd April 2019

This was the second of the two refresher courses and was held at Thomas Wolsey School in Ipswich. It was a one day refresher course for four staff we have previously trained to be trainers for their own organisations and they are all based in roles working with children. Attending the course we had Debbie Sparke from the host school, she was joined by Christine Ugolini, who was previously employed at Thomas Wolsey School and wished to maintain her manual handling trainer qualification, Jane Harvey from Lexden Springs School in Essex and Lisa Brown from Suffolk Community Health Care NHS Trust Children’s complex care team.

8th April 2019

Janet was across in Armagh, Northern Ireland today to deliver a one day Handling People with Special Needs Education one day refresher to the team of Key Trainers who work within the education board. Centaur have been working with this education board for many years now and the team have a great relationship with Janet who equally enjoys her visit across to spend the day with them. This was as normal a very busy and full day with many areas identified by the Key Trainers to cover and refresh during the day including legislation, hoisting problem solving and new techniques.

Train the Trainer Masterclass Course

The final course this week was a three day Load Management Theory & Client Handling Techniques train the trainer masterclass course which ran from the 2nd – 4th April 2019 and was held at Kelso Hospital which is part of NHS Borders. This course is aimed at staff who work with elderly and adult clients who need assistance in moving.

Attending the course we had Kelly Hope and Lorraine Moffat both from The Brothers of Charity and they were joined by Tony Hodges, Cathie McKerracher and Carole Brotherston all from NHS Borders.

Jan commented that is was a very busy three days with lots of lively discussions taking places and that the groups different experiences and knowledge were shared with each others.

Refresher Workshop – 2nd April 2019

We had another busy week this week with two refresher courses and a three day new trainer course taking place.

This was the first of the two refresher evaluation workshop, this one been a Handling People with Special Needs Education workshop for staff who have previously attended a passed our five day course.

It was held at Portland Academy in Sunderland and we had full course with six attendees, Sandra Hardy from the host school, Trudy Weston from Oxlose Community Academy also in Sunderland, Mick Slimmings and Wendy Wharton both from Catcote Academy in Hartlepool and finally Michelle Francis and Jenna Carter both from The Durham Trinity School in Durham City.

It was a very busy day with all six of the participants having areas which they wanted to refresher and discuss plus a number of problem solving task were carried out and training advice given. They also covered a number of practical techniques including hoisting.
